Meeting Sari Horwitz

One of the most significant events for me today was hearing Sari Horwitz and Scott Higham tell the tale of their investigation of the murder of Chandra Levy.

The two spoke in detail of the experience. They describe the clues that they pursued and the mistakes the police had made in the case. They spoke of confidential sources and mystery. Finally, they wrapped up the case for us.

As a student who is very interested in investigative journalism, I was extremely excited to see their speech. After the speech was over, I asked Sari Horwitz about the steps to take to become an investigative reporter. She was very nice and even gave me her card, telling me to call her at any time I need to.

This post is a little late, but I think that it is very important that I mention seeing Hoda Kotb speak yesterday at the National Press Club. Hoda was beautiful, funny, and very motivating.

I really loved when Hoda spoke about being rejected 27 times in her search for a career. That someone as wonderful, talented, and charismatic as Hoda could face such rejection really brings hope to people like me. Her story teaches about the importance of persistence and dedication.

Hoda was also hilarious. She played a few of her favorite songs and danced and sung along. She also made tons of jokes and really kept us entertained. She is a great example of how a person can be both professional (Dateline) and fun (the Today Show). I really admire her and aspire to have a story similar to hers.

Michael Shear: It Doesn’t Always Start Out Great

Today was the first full day of the WJMC. Our schedule was very full (and very fun), but there was one part of the day that stood out most to me: Michael Shear’s(New York Times reporter/blogger) presentation.

What really hit me about his presentation was the fact that the start of his journalism career did not go particularly smoothly. Shear showed us some of his graded papers from his journalism classes. He got several C’s and low B’s. To see that such a successful journalist did poorly at the very start of his career is very encouraging.

Later on in his presentation, Shear told about the dozens of publications where he applied for work as a journalist. He then told us about how he got rejected from most of those places, including the Washington Post, where he ended up working for around 20 years. Now, he is a successful writer for the New York Times.

Knowing these things about Shear was really encouraging. It helped teach us that, even if we do not immediately succeed, we still have a chance.

I just arrived today and I’m so excited to be here! I absolutely love DC and I know that I’m going to learn a lot about journalism. I can’t wait to hear all of the keynote speakers.

My trip up here went well; it’s a pretty short flight from Dallas. Now I’ve just gotten unpacked!
